Winter Filmmaking

This article talks about how you can, well, make films during the winter. Go figure, right? ;D

I didn't know that:
  • Emergency blankets are ideal for this kind of situation.
  • Plastic bags will warm up your gear.
  • Making sure you can get OUT of your shooting location helps.
This article was cool (ooohhhh). By that, in all seriousness, I mean that this article is interesting for providing such tips, in my opinion. I also like how there are the MOST unexpected things that can really help you and your gear.

My one question is: Is shooting during the spring more ideal? xD

Oz Effects

This article talks about how the latest Oz prequel utilized many effects.

I didn't know that:
  • Sam Raimi helped out with the movie.
  • Many characters in this film were produced digitally.
  • The core animation tools for this movie were based from Maya. NICE~~
I thought this article was interesting. I like how it gives specifics of how certain visual effects were created for Oz the Great and Powerful. I also like how the article gives screenshots from the film c:

My one question is: Will this film be revolutionary for visual effects?

3/24/13

This week was pretty successful I think.

What made me happy this week was I got my Abstract Audio project done on time and that I got started on my 11 second club project as well!

What frustrated me this week was the fact that I got sick the other day, and I have to make up a few tests. Kind of stressed about that..

This week I learned that Quicktime can be weird when it comes to Flash.

I want to learn how to make my work a bit more consistent.

It's been a while since we listened to Gangnam Style! xD
It's rotoscoped too, so, PERFECT!

Math=Movies

This article discusses how math makes the movies we know and adore.

I didn't know that:
  • Physics of certain objects is determined by a lot of geometry, and arithmetic among other things.
  • Pixar has to create something similar to a PNG file in order to animate hair.
  • Subdivision surfaces were first used in 1997 for Pixar's Geri's Game.
This article was interesting. I like how this article talks about the importance of arithmetic in computer animation. I also think it's incredible that these people have to put so much time into animating HAIR.

My one question is: Will mathematics influence other fields of animation.

Viral Vids

This article talks about how your video blogs can become widely popular.

I learned that:
  • Being consistent with your videos helps.
  • It's important to be considerate of your audience.
  • Being comfortable in front of the camera is crucial.
I thought this article was neat. I like how it gives a rundown on how you can make your video blogs more popular and watchable. I also like how this article uses different examples of certain Youtube bloggers and such.

My one question is: Why do people get widespread attention for their own videos?

3/17/13

This week was ok in terms of work. I started my abstact audio project which I'm happy about.
I was sick on Thursday, which kind of sucked.

What made me happy this week was starting my abstarct audio project probably. I was also happy that I got to see my cousins this weekend!

What frustrated me this week was properly syncing stuff in my audio project.

I learned that syncing is a teadious process.

I'm happy with what I know right now, so there isn't anything in particular I really want to learn.

I really liked the style of drawing here, plus it's rotoscoping!

Effects in Other Countries

This article discusses how much more taxing visual work is in countries like India and China.

I didn't know that:
  • These countries' industries exploit the workers.
  • In India, some workers work without salary for 4 months.
  • Each worker signs a 6-monthlong contract, and the employers can decide who to keep and who to get rid of afterwards.
I disliked this article. It sickens me that these people go through so much, and their employers don't care. I also think that it's wrong that these workers sacrifice their time at home with their families,, and can be easily fired.

My one question is: Why do people do this thing, JUST WHY?

Special Effects~~

This article talks about how studios that specialize in visual effects are struggling in some ways.

I didn't know that:
  • Visual effects have been around since 1902.
  • Bill Westenhofer, visual effects producer of Life of Pi, said backstage at the Oscars that the business model of the visual effects department needs to change.
  • The reason why people on social media sites have their profile pictures as a green color is in order to show what films would be like without visual effects.
I thought this article was interesting. I find it astonishing that the VFX companies are somewhat underestimated. I also think that this issue must be addressed, somehow.

My one question is: Will people in Hollywood finally see the underlying problem here?

March 8th, 2013~~

Hello~~

So this week was pretty good for the most part. A LOT of working on my 3d short was the main schtick this week.

What made me happy was how much I've done so far on my short! It's almost finished and I'm BEYOND happy about that~~

I'm also happy that some of my classmates like how it's turning out. I had a lot of anxiety about this project so it's very reassuring that I have such a great group of friends who are helping me out.

What frustrated me this week was getting my portfolio packed up and such. IT'S FINALLY DONE SO I'M IN A PEACEFUL STATE OF MIND. (knock on wood)

This week I learned about a lip-synching project, which I think will be kind of fun! I can use Flash for this THANK GOODNESS.

I really want to learn how to make complex models from one polygon object in Cheetah.

I picked this as my link because even though it's not the best
sonic game, the graphics and style are commendable.

Disney Filmmaking Tips!

This article gives advice from Disney filmmakers and how you can be successful.

I didn't know that:
  • Animating the most aggressive character is the way to go.
  • You shouldn't be afraid of asymmetry in your work.
  • It's good to have reality to your work, but you should have fun while doing it!
I enjoyed this article. I thoguht that the tips that you would never expect to be on here were great. I also like the optimistic feeling this article has. IT IS DISNEY AFTER ALL.

My one question is: Do these guys ever get frustrated at this business?

Motion Capture Actors

This article discusses how more recent films use motion capture on actors.

I didn't know that:
  • Andy Serkis is launching his own specialty film studio.
  • Steven Speilberg used animatronic sharks in Jaws.
  • Fox Studios launched a petition in order for Serkis to win an Oscar for his performance in Planet of the Apes.
I thought this article was awesome. I like how this article talks about what films have used motion capture technology. I also like how this article embraces the possibilities this new technology could bring in the film industry.

My one question is: Can motion capture evolve itself more?

3/3/13

This week was okay in terms of BOCES and everything else. I'm excited about my 3d short and I plan on getting as much work done as possible.

This week I learned about abstract audio projects. I'm excited to get an idea going for this project!!

Although, I really want to learn how to be more patient with LONG RENDERING TIMES.
Oy.

What made me happy this week was getting my animation for my 3d short going.

What frustrated me this week was probably how long it took me to do proper poses with the Pose Tag. I was also frustrated with the fact that a few people are pretty much done with their shorts. I hope I can finish mine, but I'M DETERMINED TO SUCCEED.

I thought this was great in terms of animation and detail!
